Evan Bogart and Ryan Tedder wrote this song in just three hours with an intention to give it to Beyoncé. While writing, they thought about what was happening in her life and her relationship with Jay-Z.

Jay Brown at Roc Nation (the label and management company owned by Jay-Z) thought this track was perfect for Beyoncé upon hearing the demo sent to him by Evan Bogart and Ryan Tedder.

The original version of "Halo" had a bridge, that was written by Evan Bogart and Ryan Tedder the next day after they finished the main part of the song, but it was dropped from the recording.
